SIU has 30 fraternities and sororities!  The Fraternity & Sorority Life office assists in advising these organizations & advises their governing councils & honor societies. Fraternity & Sorority Life is a unit of Student Life and Intercultural Relations.

Since our fraternity & sorority community began in 1923, we continue to be based on the following:

Greek Standards

Each Inter-Greek Council fraternity & sorority completes a semester evaluation called the Greek Standards

Greek Awards are based on the 2012 Spring & Fall Greek Standard Evaluations that each chapter completes. The  82nd Annual Greek Awards Ceremony will occur on January 29, 2013.  At the ceremony chapters are recognized for their achievement in several different categories, such as Academics, Chapter Operations, Service & Philanthropy, and Recruitment & Development of members.  

Each fraternity & sorority is awarded in 4 different categories based on their Greek Standard Evaluation:

  • Gold (achieved 90%+ on Evaluation)
  • Silver (achieved 80-89% on Evaluation)
  • Bronze (achieved 70-79% on Evaluation)
  • Bad Standing (score below 69%)

Service & Philanthropy

Greeks continue to serve the community and raise monies for charity through their philanthropic work.  Nearly 400 Greeks participated in the annual Up 'til Dawn event to raise money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital on November 9, 2012. So far SIU students have assisted in raising over $59,000 from the November event! 

  • Greeks do 11 times more hours of service than the average SIU student.
  • Greeks completed 8,423 hours of service in spring 2012 & raised $30,593.91 for charity in spring 2012.

Academics

SIU fraternity & sorority members continue to excel in the classroom.  

  • SIU Fraternity & Sorority GPA is higher than SIU GPA!
  • SIU Fraternity & Sorority freshmen & sophomores consistently have higher GPAs than non-members.
  • SIU Fraternity & Sorority members have a 15% higher retention rate than non-members
  • SIU Fraternity & Sorority members have a 21% higher graduation rate than non-members
