Fraternity and sorority life has been a part of Southern Illinois University for over 90 years, making it one of the most long-standing campus traditions! Joining a fraternity or sorority is a great way to become engaged in student life. Whether it is academically, athletically, socially, or through service and leadership roles, the fraternity and sorority community at SIU provides a network of support throughout your undergraduate experience and beyond. By choosing to participate in one of our our joining processes, you will have the opportunity to meet and contact with various students, many whom are leaders on this campus.

The decision to go join a fraternity or sorority is full of new possibilities and an excellent way to make the most out of your years here at SIU. Attending these events to learn more about fraternity and sorority life will give you a better insight into what "being Greek" is all about. Throughout the joining process, you will learn about the many exciting opportunities available to members of our chapters such as Greek Week, Greek Sing, Theta Xi Variety Show, Philanthropy events, scholarships, networking, leadership workshops, alumni connections, and much more.

The fraternity and sorority community has a lot to offer and we hope you make the choice to check us out. We are positive that you will be find a supportive environment where you are able to be yourself while learning from others and having amazing experiences. Fraternities and sororities foster an environment that allows individuals to experience personal growth while contributing to a chapter dynamic. Needless to say, you definitely can be yourself while being Greek.

Joining Processes

College Panhellenic Association (CPA)

The College Panhellenic Association (CPA) is the governing council for the sororities that hold membership in the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) or are associate members of the local CPH). Currently, the CPA at SIU has active, undergraduate chapters for 5 sororities. Each fall semester, the CPA coordinates a CPA Formal Recruitment which is a mutual selection process that potential new members (PNMs) participate in to determine the sorority that is the best option for them. The four sororities that are members of the NPC participate in the formal recruitment process. Continuous Open Bidding (COB) is a process in which chapters are able to fill available spots in their membership total when not in a formal recruitment period. For the four NPC sororities, this period begins after Bid Day of formal recruitment and chapters participate as they are able. Our Associate Member, Sigma Alpha, participates in COB year round.

Interfraternity Council (IFC)

The Interfraternity Council (IFC) is the governing council for the fraternities that hold membership in the North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC). Currently, the IFC at SIU has active, undergraduate chapters/colonies for 16 fraternities. The IFC fraternities participate in either Open Recruitment or Membership Intake. With either process, there is no centralized process and organizations coordinate their own events and schedules. Times and requirements vary from organization to organization. Multicultural Greek Council (MGC)

The Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) is the governing council for 9 organizations that have a current/historical focus as cultural-based organizations. The 9 organizations that hold membership in the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) participate in a joining process called Membership Intake. With intake, there is no centralized process like with formal recruitment and organizations coordinate their own events and schedules. Times and requirements vary from organization to organization. National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC)

The National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc. (NPHC) is the governing council for the 9 organizations that hold membership in the national NPHC. These organizations are also known as the "Divine Nine." Currently, the NPHC at SIU has active, undergraduate chapters for 5 fraternities and sororities that hold membership in NPHC, Inc. NPHC organizations participate in a joining process called Membership Intake. With intake, there is no centralized process like with formal recruitment and organizations coordinate their own events and schedules. Times and requirements vary from organization to organization.
